Dogs in Witch Hats, Babies in Afro Wigs: Happy Halloween!

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved Halloween.

As a kid, my Grammy, who was a talented seamstress, made my costumes by hand and they were The Best. Raspberry Tart and (a much less-revealing) Wonder Woman stand out to me, but there were so many others that rocked the Casbah.

Even as an adult, I loved getting dressed up. During the past 10 years, I’ve been Betty Rubble, a cave woman, a butterfly, a cat, the totally awesome drummer, Cindy Blackman, and a Powerpuff girl, to name a few.

Naturally, when I became a dog mom in 2006, I decided to dress them up as well. My late, beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Archie, loved wearing costumes and winter coats. Lucy, my spunky beagle mix, was like, “Up yours, mom. This is bogus.”

Disclaimer: I only made them wear costumes for this photo, and they were rewarded with hot dog pieces.

The following year, Lucy, who is a bit of a tomboy, felt more at home as a witch than a cheerleader. Archie was like, where’s the rest of my outfit?

A few years later, I had my first baby, and it was the best possible thing that could have happened to my dogs in regards to Halloween.

I was elated to have a child to dress. I couldn’t even make a costume decision, so he dressed up for three days, as a skeleton, a kangaroo and a pea pod.

Things have only gotten better. I now have Sweet Pea, 2,  in addition to Superhero, 5, and it brings me endless joy that they love Halloween more with each year. There’s the obvious draw of trick-or-treating and candy, of course.

But more than that, it’s fun to be someone else one day of the year. I guess for me, playing dress-up never got old. My husband isn’t really the adult Halloween costume type, so I’m glad to have this bond with the kiddos.

This year, Superhero will go as Batman, and Sweet Pea chose Minnie Mouse.

And because Sweet Pea requested it, a grown-up Minnie Mouse will be along for the ride, too. Like she had to twist my arm. 😉

I’ll close this post with one of my favorite pictures of all time… my Sweet Pea being subjected to the wig box at six months old. Happy Halloween!

Do you dress up for Halloween with your kids? What are some of your favorite costumes?

I love to dress up to. I try to keep it subtle but I do enjoy it. Skeleton this year.

Nice! I’ve never done a skeleton before. Maybe next year — I just got inspired by a friend who did totally awesome skeleton makeup!
